The High Country area offers four seasons of fun and there is something for every member of your family.

If you are a lover of the game of golf, then you'll love it here in the mountains. Take your game to "another level" at our higher elevations. Boone Golf Club, Mountain Aire, Roan Mountain, Hawksnest, Hound Ears and many other North Carolina golf courses are all within a short drive.

Spring, Summer and Fall is a great time to go hiking, mountain biking or white water rafting. There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails, bike paths and you can either venture out on your own or contract with one of many guide companies. Fishermen will tell you that our area is rich with opportunities to fish the Watauga River, The New River and more. Fly fishing is a popular pastime.

Winter offers snow sports. Appalachian, Hawksnest, Sugar and Ski Beech are all within a short drive from most portions of the High Country.

Take a heart-pounding walk across the famous Mile High Swinging Bridge, photograph bears, otters, and other wildlife in natural habitats, and hike some of the South's best trails. Also features nature museum, nature movies, restaurant, gift shops and picnic areas. One mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 305. Open all year, weather permitting in winter.

Half-hour guided tours into a natural limestone cavern featuring stalactite and stalagmite formations and an underground stream. Open daily from April through November and open weekends from December through February.

Mast General Store Highway 194 Valle Crucis, NC 28691 www.mastgeneralstore.com (828) 963-6511	Once known for selling everything from "cradles to caskets," this National Historic Landmark still carries nearly everything else you'd need for life in the past century and most of this one. The Original Mast General Store, established in 1883, is situated along the Hwy. 194 Scenic Byway in Historic Valle Crucis. Also visit Mast's Old Boone Mercantile (c.1910), a turn of the century department store in historic downtown Boone. Open daily.

Tweetsie Railroad Highway 321 Blowing Rock, NC 28605 www.tweetsie.com (828) 264-9061 (800) 526-5740	North Carolina's first family theme park with a fun-filled train ride aboard the historic train known as Tweetsie. Tweetsie Railroad has amusement rides for all ages, live entertainment, gem mining, deer park, shops, and restaurants. Open Fri., Sat., Sun., in May. Seven days a week from Memorial Day through mid-August. Fri., Sat., Sun., from mid-August through October, 9 AM to 6 PM.
